The air flow meter, also known as the intake air flow sensor, is an indispensable component in the engine. When the air flow meter is disconnected, the vehicle activates an emergency mode to ensure safe driving.
The core function of the air flow meter is to measure the amount of air flowing into the engine and transmit this information to the engine control unit (ECU). This allows the ECU to precisely adjust the fuel injection based on the data, ensuring combustible air-fuel mixture. If the air flow meter malfunctions, it can directly affect engine performance, with varying impacts such as unstable idle, poor acceleration, backfire in the intake pipe, or black smoke from the exhaust pipe. Additionally, it may cause emissions to exceed standards, and some vehicles' dashboards may display corresponding fault indicators.

The air flow meter is installed on the intake pipe, and its types are highly diverse, including Karman vortex, optical, blade, ultrasonic. When malfunctioning, common issues include circuit short circuits, open circuits, or abnormal intake air signals. A simple testing method involves unplugging the air flow meter. If the vehicle can still start without these data, it likely indicates a faulty air flow meter. These faults may cause abnormal fuel injection, resulting in an imbalanced air-fuel mixture, which in turn affects engine operation and power output.
If it is confirmed to be a mass airflow sensor malfunction, do not immediately disassemble it. First, try cleaning the sensor with a hair dryer and use a multimeter to check the signal voltage and resistance. If these attempts prove ineffective, it is recommended to replace the air flow sensor with a new one.
